Sod Roll and Pallet Calculator

Add up to three lawn zones, apply a cutting allowance, and compare individual-roll and full-pallet quantities using supplier coverage.

Use actual site measurements and the current product label. This planning estimate does not approve an installation.

Calculation method

Add the areas of up to three non-overlapping rectangular zones, multiply by one plus the chosen cutting allowance, then divide by supplier coverage per roll and round up. Separately divide the same required area by coverage per full pallet and round up. The two counts are alternative purchase plans.

Worked example: input to purchase quantity

A 20 × 30 ft area and a 10 × 15 ft area total 750 ft². With 5% extra the requirement is 787.5 ft². At 10 ft² per roll, order 79 rolls; at 500 ft² per pallet, the full-pallet alternative is 2 pallets. Do not add the two options together.

Measure each lawn zone

Divide the proposed lawn into up to three non-overlapping rectangles. Enter the length and width of the first zone; use the second and third pairs only when needed. Set both dimensions of an unused zone to zero. The calculator rejects one zero dimension paired with a positive dimension because that usually means a forgotten measurement. For an L-shaped lawn, split the footprint where the shape changes and add the resulting rectangular areas. Measure in feet or switch to metres before entering values.

Exclude paved paths, beds, buildings and other surfaces that will not receive sod. If a curved bed or irregular edge is significant, draw a plan and estimate its area separately; a simple rectangular bounding box can overstate the needed coverage. Keep zones non-overlapping so shared corners are not counted twice. The tool adds the three computed areas and displays the subtotal before applying the selected extra percentage.

Choose the product coverage you can actually buy

The starting example is 10 ft² per roll and 500 ft² per pallet. A Super-Sod product reference describes 50 rolls of 10 ft² on a 500 ft² pallet. Another supplier lists 60 rolls of 10 ft² on a 600 ft² pallet. These examples establish that a US sod roll and pallet do not have one universal coverage. Product type, supplier and local packaging can differ. Use the coverage shown in the current listing or quote for the sod you will order, and confirm whether individual rolls are sold at all.

The supplier selector fills either example. The editable coverage fields remain authoritative, so a local 400 ft² pallet or a nonstandard roll can also be entered. After a manual edit the selector changes to Custom. Both coverage values refer to usable area before your additional cutting allowance. Do not enter the planned waste into the coverage field and then add the same waste again; the calculator applies the allowance once to the measured lawn area.

Understand the two order counts

For the starting 20 by 30 ft zone plus 10 by 15 ft zone, the area is 600 + 150 = 750 ft². Five percent extra makes 787.5 ft². Dividing by 10 ft² gives 78.75, so the roll option is 79 rolls. Dividing by 500 ft² gives 1.575, so the full-pallet option is 2 pallets. The result headline shows the individual-roll count; the steps show the separate full-pallet alternative. They are not quantities to buy together.

If the supplier permits mixed pallets and individual rolls, calculate a mixed order with the supplier's sales rules. For example, one 500 ft² pallet plus enough 10 ft² rolls for the remaining 287.5 ft² would be one pallet and 29 rolls, assuming this combination is sold. That combination is a manual option and is not the headline result. A full pallet can leave more material than a roll-only purchase, so compare price, availability and the condition in which sod will arrive.

Prepare a practical installation plan

The percentage is an editable planning buffer for cuts at curves, borders, driveways and odd corners, plus minor handling losses. It does not represent a measured agronomic requirement. A regular rectangle with reusable cuts may need a different allowance from a lawn with many narrow strips. Record the reason for the chosen percentage on the plan and compare it with the supplier's ordering guidance.

Confirm grass variety, delivery date, freshness, installation window, soil preparation, grade and watering arrangements separately. A quantity calculator cannot evaluate climate fit, sunlight, drainage or establishment needs. Sod is perishable, so coordinate delivery and installation before ordering. Recheck the roll size, pallet coverage and all excluded areas against the final supplier quote.

Reference limits and default yields are identified separately from user-entered values; verify the adopted local code and current product label. Super-Sod pallet and roll coverage example.
